Windows Installs

There are two types of Windows install. You can either perform an upgrade install or a clean install.

When choosing the upgrade method consider the following

• You will begin with your current system
• You must make sure that the version of Windows being installed is compatible with your current version
• You don’t have to reinstall your programs and settings
• Although highly advised, you don’t need to backup
• If you are reinstalling the same version of Windows you won’t have to find all your hardware driver disks
• YOU WILL CARRY OVER ANY PROBLEMS. Old viruses and conflicting configurations can survive the installation process.

The alternative is a clean install. With this type

• You start with a empty disk
• You will have to locate all you program install disks
• You have to backup your data* before installation
• In takes a bit longer as you have you adjust your settings
• You must provide the hardware drivers Windows cannot locate
• Your system will be PERFECTLY CLEAN. Once software updates are applied your PC will be free of known security problems.
• After installation you can make a mirror copy of your system in its clean state. Use this copy if you encounter problems in the future. You can delete everything and return to this state.

In our view the only real advantage of choosing the upgrade method of installing windows is short term convenience. The long term benefits of a clean install are much greater. Therefore we recommend a clean install.

When connected to the internet Windows needs security software. As part of the Windows installation service we also

• Install all currently available Windows security patches
• Install an antivirus
• Install anti-spyware software
• Configure software is to self update when connected to the internet.
